thanks, she is 4"+ and in my 20g nano, spents lots of time in plain view and is not scared of anything so far. I couldn't imagine trying to keep it in a smaller tank. This pic I took just to show her size relative to the rest of the 20 and to show that she doesn't just stay in the rocks! (after the photo she crawled all the way to the top of the right hand rocks to hunt down a hermit crab...:D)

Have you tried to put a fish in for a tank mate? Depending on the species and if he's well fed he may not attack the fish.

Yes, I see them now. How long have you had your mantis for? I can't ever seem to keep mine alive for more than a few weeks.

This is my second, and it has only been a couple of weeks. I think species is key, some are fragile, some cannot be killed. I am inexperienced with stomatopods, but I always do mountains of research on evry specimen I keep, so I feel competent, will update you if/when things change and why.
cheers,
bb

Belive me when I say that I did extensive research on stomatopods. I've had 2 Neogonodactylus wennerae, 1 Odontodactylus Scylarrus, and 1 Pseudosquilla Ciliata. For some reason they all do they same thing before they die. They lay out in the open, with their swimmerettes pulsing.Sometimes they even launch up and swim in circles making helixes as they go down from the immobile state. It's really odd for this to happen to all of them.
So far The longest one I've had live is about 3 or 4 weeks, I kept him in my reef tank and decided to move him since he was doing well. I moved him, and he died the next day. The next mantis I get i will keep in my Reef tank. Everyone says that they are a nuisance and should be killed or whatnot, but with my experience with the mantis is my reef he left all the fish/inverts along provided I fed him 1-2 times a day. He left all my fish alone even when inches away from them.
Best of luck to all

This may be the result of cyanide poisonng.

I don't know how cyanide could get into my aquarium, do you have any idea Innsmouth?
UGLY?!?!? No, they are truly fascinating. You know nothing about them. If you knew anything about them you would like them. Most people who keep reef tanks hate mantis shrimp because they are a "scourge". Very untrue. Most of the hitchikers that come on liverock barely exceed 2", and can be eaten by many animals. I've seen a pic where a coral bandid shrimp was eating a mantis.
And what are your influences on not ever getting one?Because I'm sure I can provide a very good arguement on why to keep them. :D
