Potassium Permanganate as a method of algae reduction?

Potassium Permanganate, KMnO4, has been used as a method of keeping ponds algae-free without having a negative impact on the environment. It's also used as a household cleaner because of it's antimicrobial properties. There has been a little bit of research on the subject of dosing our saltwater tanks with KMnO4, but not much. One mention of it is in the book Algae by Julian Sprung. Can anyone find any additional literature on the subject... dosing instructions and what-not? Has or will anyone ever experiment with it in their reef tank? What is the potential side effects of overdosing it in a tank? Should it even be considered for aquariums, or is it something that should remain for treating algae in ponds?
Thanks for any input.

A year or so ago, maybe more...some new person on the site had put some algae remover into their tank, and was asking for help. I don't remember what was used, but it was for freshwater. I tried to do a search but couldn't find it.
Don't we need algae to keep our tanks balanced, as well as something for the algae nippers to enjoy?
