Great to hear that your tang is looking better and eating, I think as long as he is eating and you are soaking the nori in vitamins and garlic that will be enough for now, he will start eating different foods when he's ready.
Wow the horror story's with this kind of tang. I wonder if when we do hypo, if we had a bare bottomed tank and the UV running, lots of flow so the little parasite can't hide anywhere, an they go thur the UVbetter that way, if the fish would have a better chance of not getting as many on them. As most tangs lay on the bottom at night to sleep, where the nasty parasites are also.
Be kind of a neat experiment for some one. Hypo bare bottom with UV, verses hypo with sand and now UV. See which tank gets rid of the ich fastest.

Emeral crab... that would be a good experiment! I hooked up my UV... but had a TERRIBLE accident!!
My UV fell off the side of my tank and about 5 gallons went all over my floor
Can you put the UV IN the tank so I don't have to worry about it falling off the side of the tank when I am not home? Or any other ideas.... I had it secured on the side of the tank with a clamp and another clamp that was suction cupped to the side as well. I am freaked out now to put it back on.

He is still eating really well now... but he has white spots all over his body that looked like it was where the ich was. Now those white spots all have green spots on top of them. My camera needs new batteries, but I will post them this weekend. I am feeding him Nori every day that is soaked in garlic and with selcon. I am 9 days into hypo... (2 days since the ich fell off)
Lazy Pinoy... nice to hear that you have a new one that is doing well! Hope you post pics as well!

There are some UV's that go right into the tank water. Mine is not, I have it sitting behind my tank. Sorry about your accident with the water.
I would watch your tang carefully for infection, green where the ich was doesn't sound good. A good picture would help, but I know sometimes that is very hard.
How are your other fish doing? Remember you start counting for the 3 weeks after the last of the ich is gone on all fish. And if it comes back you start the count down again. Sometimes it takes a while.
Good luck.

He is starting to eat less and breathe more heavily! It looks like green or black ich on him. They are black dots around most of his body that look almost exactly like ich but black???
I will take a picture on Saturday. He is still eating but not nearly as much today

yeah i had the same poblem! mt pbt was covered in ich so serverly it looked nasty. then when the ich came off he had crap load of black spots. :scared: but soon he began eating free floating pieces of nori off the clip when the other tangs go at it. i think he's a wimp for not goin to the clip himself.
. but after a week and 1/2 the ich became less severe when i started using fresh pounded garlic juice mixed with a lil of water in his nori and mysis. i think the uv's may have helped too. oh u never said what brand/kind of uv u had. the jbj submariners can be submerged and 1/2 the gamma uv units can be partially submerged.hope ur make it!

I have raised several awsome powder blue tangs. When ever I place a new fish in my tank I use seacem galic gard on all my foods for 3 weeks. This builds the imune system of all you fish. Use a water base garlic gard not and oil base. This will help you out.

Well I would like to thank everyone for their help with my PB.... but he died last night
I feel like I did everything I could for him. I soaked all the nori in garlic and vitamins, I gave him nori 2-3 a day, checked my water 1-2 a day and obviously did hypo. After getting ich 2 times, then
the "black ich" stuff he got 2 days ago, I guess he just could not hold out.
The water based garlic is interesting vs the oil based... I will have to look into this in the future. Also I did not use fresh garlic, which I regret now in hindsight, but you know what they say... hindsight is 20/20.

I am going to finish hypo and get my fish established again for probably a month before I try another tang. I think the next one I will try will be a red sea sailfin, a powder brown (Acanthurus japonicus) or maybe try the other fish I have always wanted ... a copperband butterfly.
thanks again everyone for your help!

PS . Lazy Pinoy... your PB looks beautiful. Glad you have one that is doing so well!

So sorry to hear about your tang, I think that you did everything you could of. Finish out your hypo and then when you get a new tang I'm sure you will QT him for 4-6 weeks.
I have been off the boards for a while, been gone, then just been busy skiing, shooting leagues with archery and just haven't been on the computer much.
How are your other fish doing? Did anyone else ever get ich? I wish tangs weren't ich magnets like they are, they are one of my favorite fish.
Good luck.

Thanks EmeralCrab! Yeah I am bummed, but I learned a lot from it. One of my clowns had ich for literally a day. I only have a 10qt right now, but I think I am going to get a 20 and hypo every fish I get from now on for 3 weeks before I put them in my tank, because even if they look ok for 3-4 weeks I do not want to risk ever getting Ich in my tank again!

I thought that to, but I have gotten at least two more fish since, put them in QT, separate QT's just in case one got it and the other didn't. And had them in there for about 6 weeks. Neither one of them got it. I was just curious as to whether all fish would get it. I do think that I would do hypo on all tangs as they are ich magnets.
Good luck.
