Can someone give me the downlow on power compacts? Can you keep stony
corals and clams happy with them?

Yes, you can keep corals, even most SPS, with PC lighting. You can also keep clams, but I've heard only crocea and derasa. I will set up a 55 in September and my parents will get me a 4x96w PC system for xmas. The 4x96 is not quite enough for some SPS and maxima clams. There are 2 6700k daylight and 2 7100k actinic tubes. I will use MH in a few years on this tank. I think 2 175w bulbs would kick butt on it.

thanks clownfish! I have a 10 gal mini-reef (and its doing well believe it or not)I've had it for a few years with only 30 watts on it (one 50/50,one actinic)and I am aware you can't keep clams with three watts to the gal.My wife is getting me a 55 watt pc setup (custom sea life I think) giving me over 5 watts to the gal. I believe I can keep stony and even maxima clams with that don't you think?

I don't think you could possibly keep maxima clams with only 5.5 watts to the gallon. I will have about 7 watts/gallon (384W over 55g) and even this is not enough for some SPS and maxima clams. I would get 2 55w PCs (one 6700k day and one 7100k blue) or 4 28w PCs. If you really wanted some serious lighting for very serious animals, you could get 1 14K 175W MH, but that's a bit much for a 10 gallon. Two 55w PCs would be much less heat and much cheaper to buy and operate.
