Power Filter to Refugium

Wow!
I've always been interested in setting up a refugium to help reduce Nitrates.
However, without a sump, I didn't bother looking into them.
Now, I see that people convert their unused Aquaclear Power Filters into HOB refugiums. What a great idea!
I have an Aquaclear 500 Power Filter that I don't really need for bio-filtration.
How exactly should I go about in making it into a refugium? Do I need to buy any lighting? What sort of substrate should I use? What type of Macroalgae? Should I use Miracle Mud? Can I buy Mangrove roots?
I'm looking for an efficient Nitrate remover
.
Thanks for your help,
Michael

My vote would be to use the KISS method and just add Chaeto and a light. The light only needs to be something with lower wattage.
