:help: OK so I'm in the process of setting up my new 90 gal reef tank and I need some suggestions on power heads for the tank and flow ratings. Thanks

I've posted the following several times for folks. Believe me the Maxi Jets are wonderful powerheads.
Welcome to the board
Maxi jet powerheads are one of the best that you can get IMO. Go for the 900's as the offer a much better energy savings over the 1200 as you can see by the chart blow.
.Maxi Jets Wattage:
600 = 7.5 watts per hour
900 = 8.5 watts per hour
1200 = 20 watts per hour!!!
Model V/Hz Consumption
(in watts)
Maximum
Flow
Maximum
Pumping Ht.
Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price*
l/h g/h meters inches
MP400 120/60 5 400 106 .73 29 $27.90 106gph
MP600 120/60 7.5 600 160 1.35 53 $32.85 160 gph
MP900 120/60 8.5 870 230 1.17 46 $38.40 230gph
MP1200 120/60 20 1110 295 1.74 69 $42.85 295gph
Sure there is a difference of 65 gph between the 1200 and 900 but its still a good flow and you save on the electricity in the long run. I always like to suggest one extra for emergancy's or for mixing new saltwater.

Personally I like to try to eliminate powerheads as much as possible. To this end I have a spray bar attached to my overflow box at the return part. This spray bar is modular and I can point the seperate nozzles around the tank. I still us one MJ 1200 on the far right corner of the tank. So the best way is to have a drilled tank with internal overflow and a good return pump, then a powerhead or two.
Otherwise I would use maybe 4 Maxi jet 900's on a 72,75 or 90 gallon tank depending on your return pumps flow and your plumbing. Perhaps on a wave maker as well. But thats alot more electrical devices that way and there is more chance of stray voltage getting into the aquarium.
You can pattern a couple in the back corner pointing toward the front middle, then a couple near the center pointing toward the front corners, and or one pointing along the back of the tank so that you have flow there as well. Many options on how to do it and you will have to find what works for you.

Up to 4 however -
That all depends, is the tank drilled? is there a sump or wet/dry, what other pumps or filtration are you planning. Not drilled?
You will want to have about 900gph turnover on that tank .So what have you got setup so far or planned for?

The tank is not drilled. Right now I'm running a Fluval 404 in it but hope to set up a fuge with either the 55gal or a 20gal.
