power heads

i have a power head that i got of the guy i bought the tank from it is a powerhead 802, i think it is made by hagen. Now on to the thought, with the input valve so big how can i keep my helpless (and quite stupid) fish from swimming near it and being sucked in? all this and not be unsightly? I though about attacking a capped piece of PVC to it and drilling holes along the length, but it would be quite ugly.

Hi, try useing a piece of overflow sponge, either bigger piece wedged in inlet but not tuching impeller or place a square wedge over the bottom. This doesnt look as good and, if you loose power it will fall of. hope this helps...fixit :)

If it is an AquaClear 802, the "tube" on the intake can come off...just pull it...
I just put a 402 in my tank and my percs got into a fight and both got sucked into the tube. I was able to save one but the other died. After that happened, I pulled the tube off of the bottom and that has seemed to be "safer".

Buy the pre-filter made by the same company that covers the intake and prevents this from happening plus filters the water.Cost about 6 bucks.

I don't know if it's anything like a 505, but I had one missing the filter and I managed to fit a bio-ball on the intake till I could order a replacement, it worked great and didn't cause any flow problems
