there was a bad storm where I lived that knocked the power out yesterday. they're saying the power will be out for three more days. now the worse part, I'm 300 miles away on vacation so theres nothing i can really do. If the water temp stays about the same should my fish, anemone and coral survive???????

if the temp stays the same the only thing i would worry about is the fish no having enough oxygen to breathe but thas the only thing i would worry bout

um if your going home tommorrow start a generator if you have one or have a friend start it today if you do not have one i would somehow stir up the water

Detroit is supposed to be in the upper 80's today. If you have lights on that tank, I don't see how the temp is not going to get up over 90, or higher. If you are 300 miles away, I don't see anything you can do. Maybe call a neighbor who has a generator to get some power back on, or at the very least get some powerheads moving the water and some fans blowing across the top surface to keep the temp down.

I'd still be worried about temp. If it's pushing 90 outside, I can imagine what it is inside.

If you have a 55g you should be ok for a couple day with no power as long as the temp flux isnt too drastic. I would get a generator going asap though. I have heard of people who live in areas where power goes out regularly using APC battery backups designed for computers to run some powerheads for gas exchange in emergencies

true but the fish will die faster without oxygen than they will of heat
correct... its not the fish getting over heated that is the problem. the hotter the water is the less oxygen it is able to carry and the harder it is for gas exchange from the surface.
even just getting a battery powered air bubble thing (most fishing/sport stores have this for using in live wells) and stirring the water with a big spoon every 30 minutes will help it oxygenate. i had to run a 12G like this for a few days when our power went out.

I agree getting oxegyn in the water would be the main goal. Sounds weird but you can take some airline tubing and blow bubbles in your tank even. You could also get a battery powered fan over the top to stir up the waters surface to promote oxegynation

Buying battery powered air pumps will add oxygen to the tank. You can get them at Walmart. Sporting goods department. What fishermen use to keep their bait alive. HTH

Jthomas....please post what the temp is when you get home.
Blow bubbles, do a scientific experiment, hook up Nemo to an oxygen mask if you like, but temp WILL kill fish. I think it's all related, as Power Outage = no fans blowing, which = no circulation, which = lack of oxygen, etc, etc. But I would much rather have my tank sit "stagnant for a day or two, than for the temp to reach into the upper 90's, or higher, in that same time span.

alright the good news is I had my uncle drive to my house to hook up a battery powered air pump and the minute he walked in the power went back on. the bad news is one of the fish were dead. i'm not sure which one, he's not to smart and couldn't tell me which one it was. (all i needed to know was the color of it) I'll find out tomorrow though......

I have a lot of green algae all of a sudden also. I did a water change before i left. i used RO water. any ideas with that? its growing out of the LR and looks like fuzy grass..thank you

Dear hobbyist, when my power went out,I had no choice but to go to a local fish store, and purchase a battery operated air pump which was $20. The pump worked, and my fish are still alive .
