I have yet to get backup power for my tank even though I live in the middle of Hurricane Alley.
What do you power gurus think of this?
Golf Cart deep cycle battery for blackouts that could last several hours. And can this be used with standard outlets for pump plugs? Inverters? How would you re-charge?

 I can't believe what I see, a mod posting a link.
Beth, how about a generator. I've driven around for hours in a galf cart full of golf clubs, beer and two manly golfers (they were in the back) back and forth across the fairway looking for golfballs and a place to pee, we never ran out of gas..
JK, I think golf carts have like 6-8 of those batteris. I don't know how long they would last. Seeing how it happens a lot where your at a generator seems like your best bet.

Mark, I knew you would post that comment! It is a link, but not to a store. It links to a manufacturer's sites, which I have always done myself as needed. So

:D
Yes, a generator for the long days of no power, however, I was thinking of short-term....like during the storm when it would be hard to leave a generator on during 125mph winds and flooding. Or when you just have a long brown-out and I don't feel like jumping out of bed in the middle of the nite and running outside to crank up a generator.

I hope to move some day, but in the meantime, what about alternative power?

Beth,
I use one of those power converters, the kind that plug into your cartrucks power supply. Its probably not a good idea for you because you should run the motor while your running the converter.
I would think one of those batteries would drive a powerhead a long time.
I still vote for the generator...

I'm not discounting the generator, I'm just saying that I don't see how I can do that in the middle of a hurricane, thus the need for an alternative for short-term use when a gen is not practical.
Thus, golf battery + inverter should run for several hrs. How would you charge up the battery?

i think you would be better off with a marine battery, wouldn't have to get as many and being a deep cycle would last longer, you could get a size to match your needs better.

A good quality marine battery, cheap battery charger, and a 500-1000 watt power inverter will do the trick. Keep the battery charged with the trickle charge setting (low amp). You can stress test it with your equipment to see just what the maximum time is.
I think that most of the smaller pumps are rated in watts so just add up all the watts you wanna run and buy a slightly larger inverter.
