thanks everyone.
question-
right now i have a 12" engineer goby, a 4" maroon clown, and a 4" algae blenny.
if you had a tank completely void of tangs, what kinds(3) would you get?
achilles, chevron, and purple?
tomini? powder blue?
perhaps a orange spot rabbit in the place of one?

Ouch. Very sorry to hear that. Its kinda always in the back of your mind. Now I'm wondering if an ace in the hole sump backup could be refitted to run an aquarium.

I added a purple and a yellow at the same time, and they do fine together. But you hafta add them at the same time.
I like that combo.
Or yellow and blue hippo

Sorry to hear about your fish. The same thing happened to me (in NY) last week with those storms. Our power was out for 12 hours. The temperature never really dropped more than maybe 2 degrees. We are new to saltwater fish and have had our tank for about 2 months(purchased as an established tank with live rock, corals and fish). They were doing great, but we lost our Yellow tang and our brown-barred gobby :( As soon as I realized they were in trouble, I ran out and bought generator. Go the tang (along with clown and cleaner shrimp) in a bucket with a powerhead plugged into my car. Couldnt get the gobby out as he just hid on us. Too late though. Power came back on as soon as I got the generator plugged in. Very sad. We talked about getting rid of the tank, but gave it another shot. All is well so far. (water change, bottle of some stuff from our fish store...looking good, but still miss my fish.

well, there's only 1 way to be sure-
have an electrician wire a generator into your electric service. they make a component that will turn on your generator when the electric company's power ceases.
it's pricey, but full-proof
My hubby is a electrican and I could have shot him about hour ago. Just last night he said he needs to clamp the breaker to see how much the new lights are pulling sure enough he only said it instead of doing it and guess what the breaker tripped.
2 tanks a 90 and a 100 both with hugh sumps 15= gal each and in a matter of 5 minutes I was flooded and I was at home but the breaker didnt trip all the way so I couldnt tell which it was. So now I have 3 loads of towels to wash and I am sitting in the dark to keep the new lights on for the clam and anemonie that need it due to bleaching but hey I got the lights now.
Sorry for your loss that really sucks

Mr X, so sorry to hear about your loss! Thinking about the investment we make in our tanks, a generator almost seems like chump change!
I am in the middle of a power outage right now in Northern VA, and my little 2300W unit is cranking it out at full load-4 powerheads, skimmer, sump, canister, 324W lighting unit, chiller, heater, and of course 42" plasma T.V, cable box, my fridge and the next door neighbors fridge. Comcast has a generator too so I gat to watch TV in the dark!
You will love having the generator-the first time you need it, and it is ready to go, you will be soooo happy!

yikes!
didn't he run dedicated circuits for the tanks?
I know its no excuse but he has been working laike a mad man 68 hours last week working the day and night shift he just wanted to get the lights working cause of the bleached anemonie and gaping clam. Believe me that will be done on Saturday until then I will closely watch the tank.

nordy- is your generator loud? mine is.
someone told me the honda motors are less noisy(i have a subaru motor on this one), and i was thinking of returning this one for one with a honda motor.
this one is 5000 watts. i ran everything on my tanks, plus the fridge, and had room for more

As a follow SW hobbyist I feel your pain!
but as they say Good things sprout from the seeds of destruction
I know alot of people on here are going to rethink backup contingencies
me for one! I'm getting that generator I've been putting off buying
Thanks for the heads up

Yeah He's a pretty good dog. He apparently knows more about this stuff than me though, because when I came home with a bottle of PH Buffer, He chewed it up and hid it on me!

Hey X, not nordy, but in my experience working on them (summer job), the honda was generally quiter (relative) none of them are what I would call quiet.

so, do you think it would be worth it to return this one, or won't the difference be worth the trouble?

Kind of hard for me to say ~ I would prefer to have the quietest one possible myself, esp. if you are going to be running it for long periods of time (say 14 hours straight) and you might like to get some sleep in there somewhere. On the other hand, if you can't get the other one with the same output rating, it may not be worth the effort

well, i don't know a ton about generators, and did a total of 3 minutes of "shopping/research before i bought this-
http://www.powermate.com/generators/...odel=PM0435003
for $599.00 plus tax.
do you think i did ok?
Don't know much about the sales end of things, but those are a very nice unit, I've worked on a couple. I would say you did ok. Only advice I would give, is to be sure and put some stabilizer in the gas, when you're not using it, so that it doesn't go bad, and gum up your carb. Nothing worse than need ing a gen., not being able to start it, and having to pay a big repair bill on top of it. About $2.00 for stabilizer will save you a lot of headaches.

The only quite Honda's are the little guys. They make them in 1000 and 2000 watts but that's not continuous wattage so the most you can get out of the 2000 is about 1600 watts continuous power. http://www.hayesequipment.com/eu2000i.htm
I was able to get one for 800 because I knew somebody
but these sound like a chiller when there running.
