Powerhead...to be or not to be?

I have a 72 in cycle....I'm using a wet/dry system (at this point, without a skimmer) with a flow rate of 680 gph....I do have decent turbulence at the surface. Do I need a powerhead? And if so, can someone explain the benefits?

what kind pf tank reef? fowlr? in a fowlr you can get away without useing one but if you plan to have corals you may need to use one for the corals that like strong currents or to create a wave motion to similate natural currents
