powerheads w/ skimmer?

:confused: Just starting to aquire all neccesities for 150 gal. reef Ihave aEuro-Reef CS8-3 skimmer , do I need any powerheads? And if so how many? Thanks! I have been reading this board for a few weeks now and just wanted to say you guys sure know your stuff!!!!!!!!!! Skimmer has a Sedra 5000 pump with it. :help:

For a 150 gallon tank you will need 3,000 to 3,750 gallon per hour flowing through your tank (for a reef tank). This will be impractical to achieve without the use of powerheads. You will probably need around 6 powerheads of a 150- 170gph rating.
You can use hang-on power filters with the carbon removed as additional water flow. They are cheap and effective.

I agree you will need at least four powerheads with a high gph rate. I also agree that the hang on filter are a good source for water flow and cheaper...remember to take out the filter though. I am also in the process of setting up a 150 and I plan on a skimmer, wet/dry return pump, 2 powerheads and another hang on....if that gives you an idea.

Well now you dont have to use powerheads. You can use a closed loop system or use a really big water pump and split it to be powerheads. You just need alot of water moving to keep the poo and stuff floating and filtered.
