Predator Tanks & Refugiums

My 150 trigger tank is a nitrate machine. Does anyone find refugiums to be effective nitrate controllers or will a predator tank just overwhelm it? I have a 30 gallon refugium that I just set up with caulerpa, chaeto, ulva. I wonder if it's gonna help...I know the plants need time to proliferate. I'm just curious about others experience in this area. Thanks!

I tried,, but failed. I just couldnt get it to grow in my refugium. My Phos was really high and i was still getting hair algae. I decided to run a phos reducing product and do larger water changes, still have higher nitrites but its in the managable range.

How high are your nitrates? Nitrates really don't hurt fish and you may be going to a lot of unnecessary expense.

agreed, I have a fuge in my sump on my moray tanks with a 4" DSB, I just added the sand like a week ago so I can't say if it has helped yet, but I can't keep chaeto alive for some reason. IMO just do your water changes and it should keep everything ok...

Hey prime311, does your monster chaeto farm reduce the nitrate & phosphate levels in a predator tank? What's swimmin in your set up? How many gallons is the main tank? How big is the fuge? How do you run your lighting on the fuge? I figure if I become a water quality nut, I can reduce the amount of algae buildup & the frequency of water changes. Nitrates run between 20 & ketchup on my nitrate test kit. Phosphate steadily rises too. I have some inverts in the fuge. I know they are more sensitive.I have a dozen fuzzy chitons eating algae off the rocks w/o being eaten by my several triggers & pred wrasses. Some larger Mexican turbos are still around but several have been picked clean. When my money pit becomes an algae slime pit, it upsets the wife. When it's clean, she doesn't mind the money spent as much.
