I just mix 20 gallons at a time in a large plastic pail with saltwater, then, pour it in the tank. I haven't had any trouble with dying fish either. I empty the tank 50 percent once every month and follow that procedure. This works well for my 65 gallon and 55 gallone saltwater tank. I do have well over 60 pounds of live rock in each of the tanks and I think that makes all the difference.
