Price of Electricity

I'm another LIer. I just gave LIPA their five lbs of flesh today, so I just double-checked my bill.
I'm only at ~$100 a month in a similarly sized house (2 story Cape) with an electric stove & dryer but oil heat & hotwater. Your calculation of $.20/kW*hr holds, but what are you using all that electricity for? I'm thinking that even with electric heat (November wasn't that cold) and hot water, it still shouldn't be $600.
You checked all your appliances lately? Or is your neighbor running an extension cord?

gmann1139 - thanks for the response. It's nice to have another LI'er on here to compare with. Our total KWH for this past year (364 days) was 17,349 for a cost of $3,408.45. If you do the math that averages out to about 19.5 cents a KWH. If you don't mind me asking what was your power usage compared to mine? As you said we sound very similar in home sq. footage as well as electrical appliances. I also have oil, hot water heat. I would like to also put out there that I re-did my kitchen this past year. Every appliance is brand new and I'd assume energy efficient??? Could an electrical meter go bad spinning faster than normal? This just does not seem to make sense. And no - there are no extension cords running to my neighbors house.
My Dec. bill was $487 plus a end of year adjustment of $128 for the $615 total.
For a little info on my tank, it's been up since end of January. It's a 75gal. DT w/ a 75 gal. sump for a total water vol. of approx. 115 gal. My lighting is a Coralife 2 x 150watt HQI MH w/ 2 x 96watt atinics.(MH run approx. 7hrs/day, atinics 8hrs/day. Water movement is a wave2k. Return pump is a mag 12. Skimmer pump is a mag 7. Heating is 2 x 150 watts. Fuge has 2 pc lights(not sure of wattage). 30 gal saltwater mixing tank has a Rio 2100 and a 100watt heater. QT tank is a 10 gal running a Whisper hang on back filter and 50watt heater.
Thanks again for everyones input.
Rob
- Oh, one other thing. Our highest two month usage was between july 25th and September 25th with a total of 3310 KWH being used. At .20 KWH it came out to $775.59.

During the fall with the windows open, we got a bill of 400 dollars, so we called, and it turned out they didn't actually read our meter, just guessed, So we made them read it, and it lowered our bill by 200 dollars.

Using the tank electrical calculator over at the -- site I've estimated my tank costs at about $70-$80 a month. WOW! That's what some of you are paying in total for all your electric.
I think it's time to look into a solar panel system for my electric.

Here's my electric bills back 6 months, to when we moved into this house.
$90
$99
$137
$95
$64
$139
In that time, per meter readings, we've used 3021 kW*hr. That averages out to just over $.20 / kW*hr , so that checks out.
If you want to semi-accurately track your tank, there's a product called a "Kill a Watt" out there. I know that big book depository named after a South American river has them, and google just pulled up a half dozen listings. Costs about $25. My boss got pissed and put one on his son's room to measure his power usage and charge him for it. That might help you hunt down what circuit is draining the most.
Also, we didn't mention head counts before, but there's only 2 of us in the house. Got any fry running around that run up your bill?

Wow! That's nothing compared to mine. What type of tank are you running? Equipment? Air conditioners during the summer?
Thanks for the info on the "kill a Watt" product. I may have to give that a try.
And yes there is one small fry here but he is really too little to cause any major damage in the electric bill yet. Yet!
Thanks again for the feedback.

I'm running a 29 long and a 12 nanocube that just got its first fish yesterday.
AC is two room units in the summer.
This is our third house, and our usage has been about the same in all of them, so I'm pretty solid on my number.
And now for the important question, as a fellow LIer, what LFS do you use? I'm always in the hunt for somewhere new and exciting.

Suffolk County....Aquahut actually located in Coram. Hasn't gotten great reviews from people on here but a decent place. To get the good stuff you have to go in later on a Friday afternoon or early Saturday as they get there weekly shipments Friday afternoons. A lot of stuff sells out quickly. How about you???

Haven't been out there. I'm in Western Suffolk, and that's too far for me.
I do use Country Critters on 112 in Patchogue, prices aren't great, but they make me feel 'comfortable' with anything I buy there.
I'm also right by Pet Warehouse, so I get my RO Water and other stuff there. They usually have a great selection of 'basic' fish, so if you're looking for something fairly common, its a great place.
They were also nice enough to take a damsel that was terrorizing my tank. He's now an employee that helps them cycle LR.

lets see, 900 sq ft apartment, 24 gal nano, last month's electric bill was $25. in the summer when we're running the air conditioning it's $35. in my dad's 1300 sq ft split entry with electric stove, dishwasher, washer/dryer electric bill is $60 a month. one of the plus sides of living JUST far enough away from Pittsburgh and avoiding Duquesne light. of course, everything's cheaper in Pittsburgh!

My bill is usually 130-140 a month. This month it shot up to 250 though...not sure what is going on. We do have 7 people in the house and a 12 gallon nano, 125 FW, and 55 gallon reef. I am just not sure what shot it up so fast. We have gas stove, heat, and water. So it is not related to the weather.
Somehow we used 3,728 KWH this month....does not seem right.
