Hello fellow reefers,
I have a 55gal with a 10 gal sump. I'm currently using an air lift skimmer and I'm planning of replacing it with a Prizm protien skimmer. Is prizm any good ? Please share your experiences.
P.S. I"m a cheap

and can't afford high priced ones. :D
thanks,
Ray.

I also had an airlift skimmer that didn't seem to work at all. I just got a prizm and it has pulled so much crap out of the tank in just one week. Some people here said they were loud but the hum of the fan in my hood seems to make more noise. It was a little loud at first until i put an air filter on the air intake. The filter was from one of my powerheads. I like it and hope it clean up my hair algae. It has pulled out more brown water in the past week than my old amiricle had in the past 3 months.

One thing about the prizm is they have the BEST SUPPORT IVE EVER SEEN! I called to get the new impeller and they shipped it out. When that didnt quiet the prizm down, they sent me AN ENTIRE MOTOR ASSEMBLY FOR FREE!! They didnt even ask for the old one back.
Cant go wrong with that!

I'd go w/ the sea clone; quieter; you have to make sure you get the newer one though; should have short inside tube; prizm was listed at $80, but sea clone was $70 and rated for more gallons

I would not tell my worst enemy to purchace a seaclone. do a search on this board on seaclone and I believe you will be convinced not to purchase one. My seaclone is now filled with cement and I use it as an anchor. (wich by the way it is a much better anchor than a skimmer)
as for the prizim I replaced my seaclone with the prizim and it is a million times better than the seaclone. But i do want to get a good skimmer someday like an ev-90 mabey when i hit lotto
Please do not buy the Seaclone :(

Prizm skimmer is loud
I only recommend this to who had the skimmer
don't by the skimmer and modified it, cost more.
but I modified the skimmer
noise completly gone
Impeller is the part that make noise
You need other air source to replace the air intake from the tube.
This is what I did
Use a small peice of tape, tape the air intake black tube (no more bubbles) no noise
next, I drilled a hole(just big enough to fit the air line tube) on top of the collection cup
connect a wooden stone to 1 end of the new air line and 1 end of the air tube to a air pump.
The hole that you drilled need a air connector(you can get this in any LFS, Mini Air Tube 4 connector in 1 package) to seal the area different between the hold and the air tube(so waste stay in your colection cub)
and make sure you have a air valve to control the air going in through the skimmer.
Wood Air stone = $2.50
Mini Air Tube = $1.00
New Air Tube = $3.00
Air Pump = $15 - $20
Air Valve = $4.00
I have all this seat around.
$70 + $25 = Prizm Skimmer with no noise
or use that same amount of money get some thing else worth while.
Any more question please ask

Krusk ...
Im trying to do that. I noticed it gets REAL quiet when I tape the hose closed. But Im confused...
One end of tube to pump.. other end to stone...
where do you put the stone? Inside the chamber or inside the collection cup?

I'm sorry for the missing infomation
the wodden stone should be place in your skimmer
and it should be in the 1st champer(where the water and the original air intake come in)
