Mines 83 in my tank RIGHT now... nothing is melted and i've got all kinds of coral in there!
Yes I know its high... but all im saying is 81 is not whats making your coral melt.

I also keep my reef at 80 to 81. you might want to see if you are getting fluctuation. if you are going from the low to mid 70's and then up to 80 in a short period of time that might cause the coral to be pissed. do you have the tank near an air conditioner and does it have a daytime cycle? the only reason i say that is i had the same prob with temp spikes but they werent necessarily too hot just fluctuating too fast.

I agree, temperature not bouncing all over the place is the key. I still dont understand it myself.. but with my lights on during the afternoon my tank reaches a high point of 81-82 degrees. In the middle of the night around 2am my in-tank-temp is 80-81 degrees :p Thats very little temperature movement at all.

Might just be not enough light.
What size is your tank with just 130 watts. Try moveing the FS higher up if not too late.
81 F. is a fine temp as long as it stays there. Lighting is very important for FS and maybe your bulbs need replaceing or just more lights.

If it is a recently acquired frogspawn try putting it on the bottom of the tank, you'd be surprised how little light they like. PLUS, sometimes corals just don't ever get acclimated to our tanks and die. Something could just be a tiny bit off and the coral doesn't like it.
My tank is 80-81 constantly, never moves. I love my chiller.

I keep my reef at 82. The metal halide is on a timer and so is the heater, when one kicks off the other kicks on.

Freeze some water bottles or 2-litres (cleaned out with just water inside of course!) and periodically place one in. I do it when it gets too hot in my tank - works like a charm.

85 isn't that that bad either....on the edge...I'd put your heater up a few degrees like 84..Constant 85 is better than 80 shifting to 85 then back down to 80 again.
