Can't really call Babe Ruth in to this. The guy played 22 Seasons, had a career batting average of .342, 714 HRs, had two seasons of 20 wins or more, and a career ERA of 2.28. See if any current or future baseballs ever see those numbers. It is unbelievable. The greatest baseball player of all time, and most recognizable.

How do you figured Magic self-destructed ? Yes - he had AIDS from sleeping around but I wouldn't say he self-destructed ...
Oh yeah - LT self-destructed big time.

Yes but he never faced the likes of Bob Gibson, Satchell Paige or the multitude of international players in todays game. His stats are tainted because, in his era, he did not play against all of the best players.

Well the thread here is players who have self destructed. Ty Cobb played 24 seasons, yes he was nuts, but he loved the game. Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth are untouchable. Cobb career .366 BA, 4189 Hits, that is disgusting.

Not that you can or should take away any of the accomplishments of the older baseball players..... but the majority of the pitches they saw were ... fastball fastball fastball fast ball , slower fastball, fastball.
The Curve, slider, knuckle, splitter, fork, change up, and screwball werent really around back then.

Its easy to say well Satchell Paige was better than those pitchers who came before him, because some of us saw them play. But Babe played against pitchers like Walter Johnson 417 wins (2nd all time), Grover Alexander 373 wind (3rd all time), Christy Mathewson 373 Wins (4th all time). Granted those pitchers pitched more often there wasn't a 5 man rotation, they pitched every other day. Bob Gibson did the same thing though. But the type of pitches have evolved since then, the Babe didn't get to face nasty pitches.

but like i stated earlier the balls were so beat up so there was not alot of choice in delivery i doubt they were even round which would do who knows what to a pitch...tobin

He was a nasty ol' man, dirty as can be. He made people fear him, and I love it. I wish he were playing today with these prima donnas. I want to see Jeter cry when Ty came sliding into second, with a spike to the groin.

Here is a name from the past. Those of us who remember. There was a kid drafted by the Phoenix Suns in '91 his name was Richard Dumas. Rookie season he averaged 15 ppg, and had sick talent. He was banned the entire next year for drugs. He played two more seasons, but never could get it together. Drugs and Alcohol took it all away. He was on sportscenter highlights every night. Could have had it all.
