A little something worth people reading is a proposed bill before congress, HR 4928. It is cited as the "Coral Reef Conservation and Protection Act of 2004" Here is the first paragraph under the "Covered Coral Reef Species" section of the bill.
(A) any species of coral or ornamental reef fish;
That means ALL coral and fish that aren't captively propigated.
I am all for conserving and protecting the reefs. But an all out ban won't do it. Not only that, it would obviously destroy the hobby.
Might be a good idea to let your Congressmen/women know that you support conservation, but not an end to the hobby we all love and enjoy!
Just my Two Cents,
Chris

What does the bill say about importing corals and fish ? I'm shure that the bill does not stop the importing of corals and fish from other countries . Its more than likley just to protect U.S. reefs
(witch are almost none) and if thats the case it would have little to no effect on the aquarium hobby.

HEHE, If i knew the adress of my congressman i'd send a whole book to him...Whole entire shops are based on SW fish, doing that would close thosands of small and large bisnesses...I'd go one but i'm sure you don't want to read the book.

As you can see it DOES make it illegal to import any coral or ornamental reef fish. That means that only those that are captively bred and propigated would be legal. Not that many sp. are currently CB. The cost would be so great that most people wouldn't be able to afford most items. Almost all shops would go out of business. The hobby as a whole would suffer greatly from it. It's not being taken out of context, that is what the proposal states. Anything taken from the wild will be illegal, whether taken from US controlled waters or imported from those that aren't.
