Pros and Cons of a sump setup? What should I look out for?

Great stuff... very informative. I appreciate it all.
Jlem, I am interested in knowing more about your set up.
Can you tell me what your equipment consist of?
Thanks.
I am not counting out the sump idea. I just do want to make sure that I do not create too much work for myself. I have time, and plan on giving this as much as needed..... I just want to keep things somewhat simple. I do not like the idea of losing twice as much water due to evaporation, and then having a set up that is going to be critical with regard to water levels, etc..

I have a 125 gallon reef. My lighting consist of 4-96 watt 10K PC's and 2-90 watt VHO actinics. I have 2 Maxijet pH in each back corner, Tronic 200 Watt heater and a seaclone 150 Protein Skimmer. Mr Live rock Consist of 8 or so large pieces of Fiji and Aragocrete rock with very few small pieces that corals came on. My sand bed is only about 1/2 an inch deep. I have a Purple tang, yellow tang, Percula clown, Flame angel and Yellow tail Damsel. I perform a 10 gallon water change every other weekend and twice a week I add 10 mill of Reef Complete Calcium and 1 Teaspoon of Buffer. Once every 2 months I will clean the skimmer and powerheads. I had a Magnum 350 Canister filter when the reef was in my old 90 gallon, and really liked it but when I moved my reef into the bigger tank last June I kept it off. I was even gone for three months overseas and the tank did great even after the skimmer got to dirty to do any good after two months.
This simple approach works for me but my system is only 1 system and one approach:D

Jlem,
Wow... nice tank!
You mean you are not using any filtration?

What is wrong with a HOB skimmer. Obviously a Seaclone 150 will work on a 125 reef.

I'd say you are doing plenty right from the look of that tank.
So you are using the hang on skimmer, and that seems to be working well for you.
Amazing.

Here is a picture from a month ago. My buddies RBT anename split and he gave me one. It is in the lower right side.

Here is a front shot. These picts are from last month and the anename has almost doubled in the last month. I think that it will split soon also which will be cool.
