I'm think of using eggcrate wrapped in nylon screen and zipped tied used underneath sand bed.The sand bed will be shallow.Good or bad idea???Thanks in advance..

I remember reading something about this in a online-magazine. It's supposed to help with nitrates and/or help propagate beneficial bacteria underneath. Again, I really don't think it helps, that's just what I read. I'll try to look up that article and post it.

I have heard of dong something like that in a freshwater tank...but not a saltwater tank.
It's called a plenum. It is supposed to facilitate in creating an oxygen free zone so that anaerobic bacteria (which consumes nitrates) can exist. Dunno if it works or not...I would think it would require a deep sand bed. Think Florida Joe was trying to do one...don't know if he ever did or not. Think the thread was titled "plenum or insanity".
