Dont worry bout sumps at this point bud. It's just more to think about and more to stress about. You dont need one. With an emperor filter, live rock and live sand, you'll be AOK with your 55g
I recommend you get as much LR as you can for your 55g. If you can get between 50 and 55 pounds to start with, you'll be much better off, cuz you can cycle the tank with it. If you cant get that much in the beginning, you will have to cycle your second batch of live rock seperately (out of the tank).
Another good idea is to get a 30lb bag of Aragamax sand, and a 20lb bag of Arag-Alive (I used the Fiji Pink), and mix those together. The Arag-Alive will "seed" your Aragamax, and you'll have a great sand bed for about $50.
Also recommend Marc Weiss' Bacter-Vital to help with your tank.

Snipe, you should try out a black background. Your equipment will blend right in and you won't even notice it. I did it on accident on my tank and it looks great.
PS- UV filters will not kill any organisms that produce endorspores, spores, or cysts.

Yes I agree jus dont worrie about the sump you dont need it. If you put live rock and sand in the sump then you would have a refurgium lol. A sump has bioballs in it.
