Hey I needed help picking out what kind of skimmer I should buy for my 30 gallon reef and soon to upsize to a 55, so the skimmer will have to be atleast 55 gallons. Should I turn my old 10 gallon into a sump w/ the protein skimmer attached?
All of your posts are much apreciated.
Thanks,

-Jesse

you could go with an octopus hang on skimmer, or do like you said and make a little sump. the trouble with the 10 gallon is the small footprint. for a 55, i'd buy a skimmer rated for about 100 gallons or so. look into 100+ gallon skimmers and check out their footprint. make sure you can fit it before you go through the trouble.

I'm a little confused by what you want to do here. Are you going to keep a 55 in addition to the 30? Are you going to transfer things from the 30 to the 50? If you are just going to transfer everything from the 30 to the 50, then use the 30 as a sump (if you can).

Ya I'm going to switch all my stuff into a 55 from my 30. If I was to get a sump would my canister be useless to my tank?

No, canisters are good for running different media, so they are not useless IMO. Just not good for filtering in itself...again IMO.

Card carrying canister user here. I've heard negative things about them but I've never had a problem and actually quite like it over the HOB filtration I had on my 75g.
I wouldn't recommend running a canister on anything over 50g but that's just me. Once you break over the 50g range... sumps are a good move.

Okay, so here's what I think. I think you should pass on hooking up the 10 gallon tank as a sump and just go sumpless on the 30. Then when you upgrade, you can use the 30 as a sump/refugium for the 50. Trust me, the bigger sump and more filtration you have as a newbie, the easier it is. As for the skimmer, you can go for a lot of different things. Octopus HOB are good though.

Oh ya that makes sense. Could I still use my canister for my 55 gallon + add a sump?

Yes of course... although it may not be needed but gives extra filtration and more water flow.

I have an AquaC Remora Pro (hang on) on my 75. Worked like a champ for 2.5 years now.
I am able to keep a clean tank with no other filtration. (besides LR and LS of course)
