Protein Skimmer Needed?

I have a 220 super skimmer that I cant get working properly. The collection cup keeps filling up very rapidly and I have the waterflow valve turned down as low as it will go. Is it necessary to have a protein skimmer if I have a refugium with mineral mud and calerpa? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Raise the cup if you can. Also what does the filling of the cup look like? Is it like tar, or is it really light like apple juice?

I had the same problem and I got rid of it!!!
I then got an ETSS (downdraft) I was able to put a ball valve on the pump and slowed the overflowing water down all the way....waited a few weeks and it was done overflowing

cup looks just like regular water. Crystal clear, not green or thick and nasty just water.

I am thinking about getting rid of it. It just sucks to pay that kind of money for a piece of equipment and it does not work properly. I am thinking about just going to the natural method with alot of macro algae in my refugium.
