Hello, is a protein skimmer really nessesary i have one but rarely run it?

no they are not required.. but they are very very good things to have.,. and you should run your more than just rarley.. run it 24/7

What kind of protein skimmer do you have and how is your tank setup?

i have a aquaclear aquatics skimmer(stupid piece of junk but when it works right its skimms really well).. my tank is a 55 gallon with about 60lbs of live rock.. and a 20gallon long underneith made into a sump/fuge. my only filtration is live rock, live sand, fuge, and the skimmer.

Well i have a skilter filter with a skimmer built in and i also have a emporer 400 my tank is 75g it has 100# of live rock it also has live sand.

skimmers are very important in achieving high quality water IMO and u should be running it 24/7
