protein skimmer

 Hello everyone.
I have a question about our 55 gallon tank. We have had four healthy fish and 35 pounds of live rock in our tank for 9 months. The fish have had no problems. Well, now we have added about 50 more pounds of live rock and the person that gave us the rock said we need a skimmer now for sure. Is this true, and if so why????????????/Thank you so much for your time. Also there was a piece of green algae on the rock that I took out and put in a hospitalized tank. How do I get rid of the green nasty algae?
THANKS,
NANCY:happy:

I don't think adding more rock would necessitate adding a skimmer if you were doing fine without it before. Although having a skimmer is good, I don't think it's a MUST, especially if you have no coral.
Most types of algae can be removed by simply pulling off what you can by hand (or suck it up with a turkey baster). And then leave it in the dark until it dies off. Most algae won't survive in the dark.

Ok thanks for the good input. I have had no trouble at all, but I just wanted to know why the man told me now I would need one for sure.

I would get one. If you could see what they take out of your water you would PUKE at the thought of your poor fish breathing it.
