if i have a 20 gallon tank with 2 ocelarius clowns in it would i be able to get away with no protein

I am no expert, but I think you could as long as you are assiduous in keeping your tank water clean through regular water changes and within recommended parameters. (don't forget to keep the filters clean!) I have a 10 gal with no skimmer that was meant to be QT but ended up being home to an aggressive damsel that I had to remove from my display tank. He's just fine without a skimmer. Most people at this site will recommend having skimmers especially on large tanks. Good luck to you.

never had a skimmer on any of my tanks, 20, 55 or 75gl. I have good water movement, and honestly, I'm not sure what the point of a skimmer is.

what actually does a protein skimmer do

If you ever have seen my tank befor and after skimmer was installed. You'll be surprised!!! It does a lot more then you think. My tank was very cloudy before and couldn't understand why since I keep up with water changes and all. Ever since I installed the skimmer, the water is clear as ever. If you keep your fish well fed, a skimmer is a absolute to remove excess protein waste from your water cloumn. I don't keep a skimmer on one of my tank, it's doing fine but it could do a lot better with a skimmer installed. Which I will install one once we upgrade the tank sometime soon. Once you get one installed, look into the collection cup once it starts working, you'll see what it pulls out of your water. You'd be surprised!!! :happyfish
