Hi, We are looking for a new protein skimmer. We currently have a Euro Reef RS-80 that is going crazy, it just keep filling with water, there are no adjustments on it. We just moved this tank to our house from the sellers house on Saturday. My husband was looking at the Bubble magus 180EX. Our tank size is 90 gallon and our sump is 35 gallon. Thanks

I use the Octopus XP 1000sss on my 90g with a 40g sump. I love it...it is easy to adjust and the cup is large and easy to remove to clean, it just snaps right back into place. Best of all...it works awesome, pulling out sludge that smells like raw sewage, so my fish have a nice clean tank. Best skimmer I ever used, and I have gone thru pleanty of them.

It's a good working cone skimmer for a much larger tank. If you completely oversize your skimmer, it won't run as efficiently as a more appropriately sized one would be.
It also depends on what you are trying to accomplish - if you are going to heavily stock the tank and heavily feed, then it may be a good idea to get the larger skimmer. If you are going to have a moderate to heavy bioload and want difficult corals like SPS corals, then it's also a good choice.
BM skimmers have been proven to be a top quality brand for a while now. I just am leery of atman pumps. I go for the higher quality pumps when it comes to skimmers - like Sicce and Bubble Blaster myself - and then there are the Red Dragons and other even higher quality pumps that are just crazy expensive - but you get the point. Atman pumps are good little pumps - but start saving for another one within the first two years.

Thanks, for writing back. We want a very live aquarium with fish and lots of different kinds of coral and yes my husband likes the SPS corals. We went with it, since it was a good price with a 1 year warranty too. But it's still doing the same thing as before, just clear bubbles, doesn't seem to be getting any dirty stuff out.
Could it be the tank isn't really dirty yet or maybe the skimmer needs to break in?
Here are some pictures of what it is doing? And any recommendations on lowering nitrates, still in the 40's and all other levels are perfect. Done 3 water changes and not dropping at all. Also any advice on a automatic overfill??

You have the outlet almost completely blocked on the skimmer. Open up the outlet and the skimmers water line will decrease. Then give it a few hours to build up a foam head. The water line mark should be a line on the skimmer itself.
Check how old your test kits are. Old test kits or test kits that have passed their prime will give inaccurate results consistently. I would double check the nitrate results by taking a water sample to the fish store and getting them to test it. Or, find a friend that is also in the hobby who is willing to test your water for you.
What is an automatic overfill?
I know of automatic neck cleaners, automatic fish feeders, automation through controllers.. do you mean Auto Top Off Units (ATO?) Yeah,... I know a little bit. Measure your space.... buy a container (glass, acrylic, food grade plastic) for your reservoir. Pick an ATO off a website - like a JBJ unit - or a Tunze Osmolator. Install according to the directions and your set! Or, there is the semi-poor mans method - which is having it gravity feed and installing a float valve in the sumps return pump chamber. And then there's the Dirt Cheap Dirty method - which is using a container and some airline tubing with a couple of knots in it and you try to match the evaporation rate as closely as possible.

You passed up on a very good skimmer.....Probably the EuroReef needed a good cleaning, but there is adjustments on those skimmers.
