Any suggestions on a good protein skimmer? I'm in the market to purchase one and wants to know if anyone has any suggestions on what is good, affordable, and efficient.

You have got to factor in a lot of things when buying a skimmer like tank size, bio load, hang on or in sump etc are some of them. Protein skimmers vary from $25 (air driven) to 100's (verturi style) to $1000 (gemini) which of course is ok if you have a tank size of 500 gals plus. You should usually buy something that exceeds your tank capacity. I use Aquarium systems seaclone skimmer which is venturi style and comes with a pump (usually you have to buy a separate pump for a skimmer) and cost $70 at www.petwhse.com. Its good for a 100 gal tank.
You can hang it on the back of your tank or in the sump.
My second favorite is ETS skimmer. They start around $300 dollars and you have to buy the pump separately. If you have a tank capacity of more than 150 gals, I would recommend you buy that. You can get one at www.championlighting.com.

I have a bioskim 600 made by US Aquariums. The cool thing about it is that it is an all-in-one system, biological, mechanical and protein skimmer in one. This is great because you only have one box sitting on the back of the tank. It works very well and the air does enter the skimmer with the water. The whole thing only cost me $150 at my lfs and I have never lost a fish or been overwhelmed by algea.
