protein skimmers

I am setting up a new tank (55gal). I am about to purchase a skimmer and no nothing about them. I have found a ViaAqua Multi-Skimmer which can be purchased with a 5W UV Sterilizer built in for around $118 (model #VA2313). When compared to the Prizm Protein Skimmer Deluxe and a seperate UV sterilizer this is less than half price. Any advice or info in the reliability/function of the ViaAqua Multi-Skimmer.

you get what you pay for... dont skimp when it comes to the health of your tank... but dont get ripped off :D

IMHO, don't skimp on the skimmer. Its INVALUABLE! Personally, if u want a HOB, I would recommend the Aqua-C Remora. If you have a sump, I LOVE my Euro Reef. Shhhhhh.....Sometimes more than my wife....

What about the Prizm Protein Skimmer Deluxe? Is it any good? then go with, I guess a seperate UV.....

when a skimmer also acts as UV sterilizer then your not gonna get the full quality out of each part... not like you would with seperate units.... a skimmer by itself... can give you 100% because that is what it was made for... specificly... and a uv sterilizer can give you 100% from it because that is its main function .. like a skimmer

Just a question, but why the UV? UV kills good bacteria along with the bad. It doesn't discriminate. Is there a specific problem ur addressing with the UV? If ur just getting one because the LFS told you it was a necessary startup piece, its not.
Since u need the HOB, Aqua-C Remora is my suggestion. With ur tank size, u dont need anything bigger.

thanks for the info. And I thought some of my other hobbies were expensive. Want to do it right, just not over due it.......

prepare to spend $$$$

Get the AquaC for a 55. I have it on mine. It is supossed to be a HOB, but I put in as a HOB in my 10 gal sump... works great.
You will be happy. Make sure to get it with the MaxJet 1200 pump and NOT the RIO 800.

there is one of these on a very well reputed auction site for 165. I bought the same one and i am very pleased with the results. as said above, skip the uv sterilizer and always get second, third, fourth, fifth........................opinions.
