Protein Skimmers

OK, I am ready to upgrade to a real good protein skimmer finally. I am adding my Metal Halide lights, and a 50 gallon Sump this coming week. I have a few questions that the experts could help me with.
One, my display tank is 90 gallons, with a 30 gallon refugium, and now adding a 50 gallon sump.
First, should the skimmer rating be for 90 gallons, or for the total water volume of 170 gallons including the refugium and sump?
Second, I have narrowed my choices to either:
Euroreef CS8-1 if you say the rating should be for the Display volume... larger if total volume....
OR
E.T.S.S. Evolution 500
If anyone has experience with either or both, I would love to hear the major differences between them.. from reading, it seems that the E.T.S.S. skimmer requires more maintence, though I am not sure, but it appears that the base contains bioballs whick must require cleaning periodically.. Does it require more cleaning than a Euroreef?
Also, I will say thanks now for your advice, because if my wife finds out I am spending the approximately $1800.00 with the Metal Halides, sump, and skimmer upgrades I could possibly be dead before I can reply :scared:
Thanks, Dave

I use an ETSS and have no problems. I kinda still wish I was a member of the Euro-reef cult. People that use them love them.
oh yeah, and it should be big enough for your total water volume.
