Protein Skimmers???

I have a 75G tank and I have had fish for about 2 years now. I would like to start getting some live corals and stuff. I'm unfamiliar with kinds of protein skimmers. Would it be better to get a sump model or a hang on? If anybody could give me some info on where to start on introducing corals into a tank that would be great.
thanks

Sump hang-on or a model inside the sump all depends on your set-up. I had the same question and just recently purchased a hang-on skimmer which pulls off my sump. You need to find out how much room you have in your sump (for the pump), and if you have a bulkhead or not. I have a bulkhead in my sump but wasn't able to utilize it for space reasons. The hang-on works just great. Hope this helps!!!

thanks for that info that helps a lot
This may sound dumb but I have an Emperor 400 filter which is a hang on model, so does that mean I need a hang on skimmer also. I guess my question is do you need a sump filter to have a sump skimmer :(

I have an Emperor 400 filter, 4" DSB, and Remora Pro hang-on skimmer (great hang-on skimmer, IMO).
I have no problems with the bio-wheels (biologically speaking), but I'm planning on moving to a sump system for better mechanical filtration and to get all that crap out of my main tank.
When I first set up my tank a year ago I thought I could live with hang-on equipment, but I've reached the point where I can't look at my tank without getting annoyed at all the pumps, heaters, intake tubes, cords, etc, etc, inside and behind my system.

Bluto, I completely agree with you. On my current system I have everything as hang-on or right below the tank in view. It has been this way about a year and it just annoys me to look at the mess. Thats why I am putting all the filtration / treatment systems in a work room in the basement and run the display tank from there. Easier to clean also. You don't have to worry about splashing water around in a nice area.

I can tell you what NOT to buy---Titan Venturi--biggest pain in the ass ever <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" /> Took two weeks and 5 calls to tech support just to assemble the bleepin thing-then after 3 floods, countless hours of putzing with it and 10 migrains, I wound up throwing the thing out my window. I was very upset trust me don't get one.
