OK i got a 55gal tank with a 30gal sump/fuge and i just got a asm g-3 protien skimmer and got it all set up plugged it in and it filled up really fast and overflowed a little were the top cap connects to the main part so i looked around and saw my o-ring wasnt on then put that on and plugged it back and it filled up about half way and stopped???? should it do that and will it just slowly fill to the top or is something wrong??? whats happening???

Make sure it's in the right depth of water, for instance my euro reef needs to be in 6-8 inches of water. That's measured from the bottom of the skimmer to the waterline.

the collection cup on your skimmer shouldn't fill up with water, it's going to fill up with skimmate. It should look dark brown in color, and will have the texture of diarrhea... lol. Most skimmers also take about 2 weeks to break in, so don't fret my dear. If after that, you still don't see anything in the collection cup, try playing with the air valve on your powerhead, so you get more bubbles.

o i know about the collection cup and all but my water/bubbles are only fillin the protien skimmer up about halfway is that normal and will it eventually go to the top or what do i need to do??? i know if i put my finger over the airhose it'll go up but not all the way so i dont know what to do???

just give it time to break in, and try to adjust your air valve to let more air in.

oh, lol. Ok, that's how it's supposed to be. My skimmer looks like the bubbles aren't reaching the top either, but it still collects a whole ton of crap...

yeah, if i remember, i do this at work, so i may not remember when i get home. Mine is built into my wet/dry filter, so it doesn't look like yours.

Do you have any bubbles in your tank? You say that you have your skimmer mounted outside your sump. Did it ever fill up all the way under this configuration?

yea the first time i ran the the protien skimmer it just filled up really fast and then i stopped it and messed with my skimmer and saw i forgot to put in and o-ring where the topcap goes so i put that in then turned it back on and it has only gone up about half way

You probably have a water leak somewhere. If water is escaping through a hose before it gets to your skimmer, then it will not fill up enough. Your water "should" fill up the skimmer when you turn the pump on. I would check the hose coming off the pump and see if maybe its just not on tight enough and could be spraying back into your sump before it gets to your skimmer. Also, check the return hose and see if it is loose. If the height adjustment tube is not in tightly, it will let some water out and your skimmer will not fill up enough. Check your pump and make sure the impeller housing is screwed in tightly and that the pump itself is not leaking.
I'm pretty sure that you have a leak somewhere. Could you have left off another o-ring?

OK i checked all my piping and yes it was loose a little bit but not leaking so i pushed it in a little further and turned my pump back on,.... but it just filled up my protien skimmer really fast all the way to the top???? so i turned it off really fast what could be wrong im getting really mad  about it i dont understand why its not working right and i also noticed that it has a small chip in it at the top of the skimmer where the top screws in its pretty small and when my skimmer fills up really fast it leaks very little??? any ideas of why my skimmer still isnt working???
