I am looking to add a protien skimmer to me 55 gal reef tank. I have looked into the seaclone skimmer or maybe the CPR backpack unit. Does anyone out there have any recomendations?
CPR Bak Pak is tyhe best choice. I've been running my 55 with a Bak Pak II since Febuary, and its great. I've heard alot of bad storys about the Sea Clone. My LFS (Who I trust very much) even talked me out of buying one.
It depends if you want to hang it on the back of your tank or install in next to or in your sump. I use a Top-Fathom brand skimmer. They are made if PVC and are very heavy duty. I have never met anyone else who uses one except for the people in Baton Rouge who are in the aquarium hobby and business. Here is their link. www.top-fathom.com
I have never had a problem with mine it works better than I imagined
If your looking for a hang on type the Knop is a pretty good skimmer. I use a Maxi-Jet 1200 pump on it instead of the Rio 800 some LFS sell them with. It is a typical venturi skimmer made in Germany. It's worth a look at if you can find one. I had to order mine off the net. LFS's back ordered 2-3 months.
i use a seaclone myself and don't have a problem with it!!!!!!!!!! It is up to you to do what you want,,,,, depends on what you want to do with it ???????
I recently (about two weeks ago) installed my sea clone and it works great. I have a 30 gal tank and in two weeks I have seen so much crap coming out of my tank.
Installation is pretty simple. You can follow the instructions on the booklet. You may experience large amount of tiny bubbles at first if you have been using conditioners in your water. They will go away after a couple of weeks.
In general, protein skimmers with venturi intake work much better than air driven skimmers. Sea clone is good for a tank size up to 100 gals. Other venturi skimmers are also good but some german brands are very expensive.
It all depends on individual experiences.
