publix clams

i have heard of people buying clams from like publix and putting them in there tank.... are they live when they do this?
Do the act like a cleaner clam?

its like a grocery store in florida sorry... are they packed on ice?
in a tank?
do you just drop them in and they clean like a cleaner clam?
what kind should i get?

btw now that i got you on this thread my maroon clowns have sort of paired up.... they will like start the night off in the same corner and then the female will leave the mael and a t feeding time the male will still sjake showing submission! yay

I think those are the same clams everyone is talking about.
I plan on running to Publix myself in about a week or so and getting some clams.
They should be on ice to keep them alive, just remember to "burb" them so that the expel any bad water they might be holding in their shells.

I got a few from the grocery store (littleneck clams) and took some tank water and placed them in there to bring up the temp and let them burp then I rinsed them again before putting them in the tank. One died (the clam opens all the way when they die) abd one is under the sand cleaning away.

I got some littleneck clams at Publix. They only lived for a couple of weeks though. I'm not sure what was wrong with them.
But yes, they are about .40 a piece at Publix and as stated above make sure to "burp" them in seperate tank water so they can expel and nasties they might be carrying.

I took some tank water and put it in bowl, then place the clams in. As they start feeling comfortable after coming out of their freeze state from being on a bed of ice they will open up and start taking in and expelling water. That is what burping is. They need to expel whatever might be inside just in case there are any toxins that could hurt your tank.
