Not true. I have a Valentini Puff, and when I first introduced him to the tank, he started to go after my hermit crab, who is on the bigger side compared to most. He would try to tip him over, but after I caught him doing it I would move him away. After a few weeks of being "scolded", he finally gave up. Its been almost a year and they live together fine.
Not the same for my snails though, my Valentini has left me with 1 (huge) Turbo Snail. He wiped out the rest of them (19), over about 4 weeks time. He also took out all my Cerith Snails. I have 1 left, which was a hijacker on some LR. Atleast I think its still alive lol.
Its "hit or miss" with a Puffer, there are no guarantees. I have a Coral Banded Shrimp too, and when it was put in the tank, my Puff look at it and swam around it a few times. But once he realized the CBS would fight back (unlike the snails), he left it alone and doesnt go near it anymore.
If you get a Valentini, feed him mussles and/or clams once or twice a week, and that might help keep his eyes off other things

I have a bluespot puffer who does'nt touch the snails or crabs..but the snails are as big as my fist, and the hermits are redleggged mexican hermits..and they learned to stay hidden by day. They also have a big left claw that they shut down over their shell if threatened. I have'nt lost one.

I have a hawaiian spotted puffer which is about 3" long and doesn't go near my hermit crabs but sometimes picks at my 2 urchins and chocolate sea stars with no success.

I currently have a 6-inch dogface puffer and two 2.5" shelled hermit crabs in a 145 gallon. As long as you keep your puffer adequately fed I don't believe he will go after the hermit crabs.

Thats because its "hit or miss" with a Puff. I said above that my Puff will not go near my Coral Banded Shrimp after intitially showing interest lol. Well, yesterday I looked over and my Puff is half-way in a cave getting "cleaned" by the shrimp. He went back and forth between the front of the tank and the shrimp several times. I guess he likes the feeling of the shrimps antennae rubbing against him

Like I said, hit or miss, you will get varying and differing opinions. Why would my Puff liquidate my snail population lol, but leave me with one huge one
Hit or miss.
I guess the best thing to do would be to get a small Puff and see what happens. Like mentioned above, keep him fed properly. I give mine a clam or mussle atleast once a week, depending on availability. I live near a marsh, so now its the season where I can go out dig up my own mussles while I'm fishing for Striped Bass
