puffer

I was told that they may leave the corals alone, but will eat your crabs and shrimp. Very risky in a reef. Believe me, I wanted one too... It would have taken just one person to tell me it was ok to do so, and I would've done it. But fortunately, no one did.

...set up another tank.. h*
I have a porcupine puffer in a 100 gal with a niger trigger, tomato clown, yellow tang and about 50 snail shells... what puff can't bite whole the trigger rips apart and eats..
The tang takes care of the growing alge, I just have to clean the glass alot. The few snails that have learned to only come out at night can't keep up.
puffs are VERY cool though. I don't know much about other ones but my pork is the best. He is like a dog.. very happy to see me get home and sulks when we go on vacation.. shoots water out of the tank to get attention and dances the biggest happy jig when shown food. Will come up and take it from you hand...
I love my other fish, but as far as personality.. nothing beats my puff

I used to have a pork too. I loved him, he was so cool and was full of personality. But unfortunely I had to get rid of him since he out grew the tank. I cant wait till one day when I can get a tank big enough to house one forever.

I agree with DeniseC on setting up another tank if you have the funds. This would allow you to test the valentini out with a couple pieces of your coral. They can be reef safe if fed properly. I think they do better if fed frozen at an early age. I would look for an extremely small one with open beak if you are to give it a try...
I have mine in my 55 with softies and its doing very well, does not even bother my shrimp. My valentini is very docile and peacful, I can not even get him to attack a snail

Hairy leather, 15 different types of zoo's, yellow polyps, a colony of red mushrooms, 3 pumping zenia, button polyps, some other softies as well..."in a 55" But the point is I may have one of the most reefsafe puffers I have ever heard of. My valentini's temperament is a coward, he even lets the chromis, bi-color blenny, and peppermint shrimp take food from him. I have only seen him blow up once and that was during the move. The valentini's got so much personality I can actually tell when hes mad at me :joy: I thought there would be some problem with the shrimp but there is not.
MANY VALENTINI'S DO EAT CORALS. If getting one test it out first. Get a ugly colony of brown zoo's, mushrooms or the like and test him out. I have heard that some have there's go beserk randomly I believe this to be becasue of conditioning of the animal. I think tank raised valentini's that were fed shrimp at an early age are far less likely to raise havock whereas many of the 3 inch valentini's we see at the store are accustomed to having to hunt for food. Its just a personal theory but it makes alot of sense to me...
I am no puffer expert but only know about my fish/valentini.
I also keep the valentini well fed so the beak stays trimmed.
