Pulsing Xenia Qustions

First one is why does my xenia at different parts of the day stop opening and closing? is this normal?
Second one is that my calc is 480-500 and the guy at the lfs said it will burn my xenia alive and i shouldnt of got them is this true?
Last one is how long does it take to start spreading?
thankyou

The only problem with Ca around 500 is that it makes it more difficult to maintain Alkalinity. Carbonate alkalinity is very important to Xenia.
As far as the Xenia not pulsing that's a tough one since nobody really knows why they pulse in the first place. My guess is that your PH is changing during the day. You could test you PH at different times and see if it correlates with Xenia pulsing.
Again, I'd keep an eye on Alkalinity.

alk is ROUGHLY (only got test strips for alk) 180-240 but its higher
Numbers are more useful but I understand. There's nothing wrong with keeping ALK in that range. The high Calcium is NOT going to burn your Xenia.
To answer your original question, it can take a week or two for Xenia to acclimate to a new system. Once they are settled they can spread vary rapidly. Be careful not to let them take over your tank.

at this point i only have very small sps frags (birds nest monti and etc) equaling to ten along with a clam and leathers and some softies
so at this point i want them to spread

My system is going on two years, never had any MAJOR issue such as heat or bioload.
At a time i did have hair algea problem untilt walter (my lmb) ate all of it
I had recently upgraded to individually reflected t-5 extreme equaling 156 watt
roughly 80 lbs of lr and PLENTY of ora aquacultured sps and lps and softies coming (i tend to like aquaculture due to hardiness)
roughly 6-8 inch sand bed
Fish:
Engineer Goby
Sixline Wrasse (KILLED 4 of my fish......i am selling it to someone with a folrw tank)
2 chromis
engineer goby
lmb
snails,hermits
urchin
blood fire shrimp
and i THINK/Hope a pistol shrimp (i hear clicking sounds but arnt rapid)
and alot of sps and some lps and softies

My pulsing xenia will close for periods of time and nothing changes in my tank I'm not sure why. It also spreads really quickly and I could not get it off my rocks if I tried.
