Pump Question

I'm having a little problem with my pump sucking the water out of my sump faster than it's returning to it. I was wondering if me installing a ball valve right above the out of the pump to restrict the flow out of the sump would screw up the pump. Has anyone done this?

i would think that it would not hurt the pump but not 100% sure?
I know most skimmers have some type of control valve on them for flow, along the same lines anyway.

Putting a valve on the output side of a pump won't hurt the pump.......Putting a valve to throttle it down is pretty common.....How much are you talking about closing the valve? If you stop and think about it, all your doing is adding head pressure to the pump....so in reality it wouldn't be any different then throwing a couple more elbows in your plumbing, or adding extra feet of piping....The pump doesn't really no or care why it has extra head......Should be fine as long as your not talking about closing it half way.

I am looking at a bigger pump also as mine is an ocean runner and only gives me around 300 gph flow.
If you use a ball valve will it make the pump hum louder?
