Pump ratings

When a pump talks about Max Head, are they referring to just vertical feet, or does it include linear feet as well. I'm looking for a pump to pump water from downstairs to an upstairs tank, which is only about 21 feet, but I still need to push the water about 20 more feet sideways. Anyone have a suggestion about pump sizes that would do this?

Max. head is the pressure at the pump discharge, so you have to take in account for all pipe and fittings after that. although the horz. pressure loss is not near as great as vert. it still has to be taken into account. what type flow are you looking for? Also if you can give me an idea of the fittings vert. and horz. lengths I can help come up with a pump.

I really don't need alot of flow. In my infinite wisdom, I put my 150g tank upstairs and all of the barrels I use to mix saltwater are downstairs. I'm tired of lugging 25g of water upstairs do do water changes, so I want to have a pump to do it for me. I would settle for 100-200gph at the end.

My vertical distance is about 21 feet, with about 20-30 feet of horizontal distance it has to cover. I'm hoping to be able to use a flex hose, but if not then I would have 3 90 degree elbows.

Here is a few options, based on 21' vert. 30' horz. 3 ell's one union and one valve.
Iwaki 40 rt-2 = 104gph
Iwaki 55 rt-2 = 390gph
Iwaki 70 rt-2 = 638gph
Iwaki 100rt-2 = 1029gph
The Iwaki has some of the better head pressure ratings from what I can tell, and you would need a lot to pump that distance.
Hope this helps
This is figured with a 1" return piping

LOL, yeah, the 100 would be extreme overkill for you needs. I thought you wanted a sump pump for your 150.

In a perfect world, I would have a huge sump in my garage and pump the water to my 150 upstairs and have the same system also run my 90, but my wife would kill me.
