Hello, we crate trained our puppy and installed a small dog door. Because dogs are social den animals they are taught at a very young age by their mothers not to soil the area they sleep in. Dogs used to live in caves and underground (terra, latin for ground, i.e Terrier) anyhow ,if the pup sleeps in the same area every night he will not urinate there unless he really has to go. You just take her out each night prior to putting her bed in the crate. Using a crate makes them feel secure also, similar to a den or cave, the dog knows this is a solitude where kids wont bother him. Just remember not to keep him in it for more than night time and take him outside first thing each morning. There is a good book called "Good owners, great dogs" dont remember the author, sorry. It was very helpful. Good luck.

Well I can say if you have a small area that he gets left in during the day or whatever, keep him in that spot. Do not let him run the house (unless you are playing). Use one of those puppy pads and get him used to going on that in "his area". Then you can slowly move it to the door and then outside until he gets the hint.
You can also get a dog door. This was the best investment I made with my Yorkie. He just wasn't getting it. When we put the door in, we gave him treats with myself on one side of the door and my husband on the otherside. We would take turns calling him and giving him a treat. He figured the door out REAL FAST. Good luck

Yeah our dog whined too, he eventually stopped a few weeks later after a routine had been established. I had to put his crate into anther room just so I could sleep. After a few days he got the hint and stopped whining, had to provide a few chew toys for him to play with until he went to sleep.

Same here except the dog door crate only needs to be big enough to stand up and turn around I bought three for my lab as she grew never had a problem she sleeps in it every night when it gets late she just goes and gets in it

take the puppy out side a lot . move the time between trips apart a little bit longer each time. Lots of praise for potty out side and nothing for potty inside . especialy don't repremand the pup. If you walk it on a leash try to take it to the same place it potty's every time you go out . it will build a routine. and the pup will learn faster .

I have a 4 year old Husky/Sheppard mix and she was crated also. At night and while we were gone to school or work. I would come home on lunch and let her out and my son got home about 2-3 hours after that. She whined the first few nights in the cage but realized that it didn't work. She only ever peed a few times. Between the kids and I we took her out every 15-30 minutes for the first few weeks I guess. I would recommend a crate for any dog. She still goes to hers to get away when she wants some piece and quiet or if we come home and she has gotten into the garbage and is in trouble she runs to her cage. She never gets locked into it anymore. Hasn't for a few years. When she was a puppy I could not leave anythign at all in the cage with her. She would eat it. I put a blanket in and she ate it but thankfully threw it up. She was probably 3-4 months old at the time.

hha, alright...and ive switched from givin him treats after he comes in(from peeing) to right after...he seems to think now that going inside entitles him to a treat,lol...but he definitely will sit down when told...most of the time. :joy:

Here is what I do with the new puppies I get, and tell the people what I sale the puppies to do.....
1.Be consistant.... they need regularity.... they will become like clockwork...
2.In the morning when they wake up take them right out, to the spot where you want them to go...... AND praise like crazy (treat and verbal)
3.Ten minutes after their morning meal, take them out, they will want to go......AND praise like crazy (treat and verbal)
4. Every 3 hours take them outside to the spot you want them to go......AND praise like crazy (treat and verbal)
5. After their nightly meal take them outside to the spot you want them to go......AND praise like crazy (treat and verbal)
6. Never feed them after 6 P.M. if you do not want to have to wake up in the middle of the night for their night time pottying (Maybe once.............. in a while)
7. Right before bed take them out to the spot you want them to go......AND praise like crazy (treat and verbal)
8. If you have an accident....... You need to scold them......DO NOT YELL AT THEM....Raise your voice slightly, and point and talk to the spot where they had the accident....telling them "this is go out side" or what ever KEY word you use to signal that you want them to go outside!
9. Always use a KEY WORD "go out side" and have them do a KEY ACTION that means that they want to go outside, like "Bark", "Jump on your leg", or "go to the door", the key action will become a part of their daily rougtein, and then if they need to go at a diffrent time they will "TELL YOU".
10.ALWAYS PRAISE and TREAT...... But be careful, alot of puppies get smart to the treat in there, and will go outside SQUAT..... and run back to get the treat.... with out using the bathroom..... So Verify that they are actualy doing what they are suppose to..... ONLY TREAT IF THEY DO IT......
Hopefully this is helpful, if you need any clarification please ask..... I am tring to make a deal with you, on Xenia so I am very distracted....... I want Xenia!!!!!!

Here is a puppy that I have for sale right now.....

lolol....you shall receive...thanks for the help...its hard to be 100% consistent with classes, as i am off campus...and tue and thur i am gone till 315, and work at 5 then....but we always check to make sure he really went if we couldnt already tell...and we are trying to get him to ring bells ont he door. :joy: i think he is getting a little better, and when in his giant crate he goes on a pee pad...the pee pad wont conflict with other training will it? we don't tell him to go there or anything, thats just usually what he does when crated(instead of holding it in)

Yeah it will be kinda like a contradiction to them.... and if you ever have any rugs in the house...... they look like a potty pad to them.......
...... I don't recomend them..... over time if you are constant with them they will learn the scedule that you want them on... But if he only uses it when in the crate.... I wouldn't see to many problems....... Just pay attention..... and see if you see any conflict!!!

Those are good looking dogs. Very cute. I used to have a long haired Dachsund (spelling) we brought back from Germany. His name was Salty.

i crate trained my new puppy and put him out as soon as he looked like he needed to go ....eventually he went to the door and started to bark or cry when he needs to go. its a couple months later now and he can hold it alot better now and knows to get my attention when he has to go just takes time and consistency but the crate definately helps when they are younger because they will learn not to go while they are in there.

), But if I need to ship I change the price a bit...... We are located in utah.... If you would like more information on them Chipperbird@msn.com
As for water intake it goes the same as the food..... unless the pup is playing really hard put a little down so they do not dehydrate........ or if you keep it really warm in the home if you see the puppy panting (sweating for humans) Then let them have a little bit..... If you want to try a CHEAP treat.... works for doxies really great. "Ice Cubes" They love them!!!!
