purple looking film on sand

Increasing your flow and using RO/DI water usually makes it go away. I heard it can smother fish and corals but I don't know from experience.

If it is purple and not hairy per say...it is normal. It is corraline that is developing on the sand bed because nothing is disturbing it. Add more nassarius snails and this will shift the sand bed. The white sand bed is reflecting the light, and is usually the first place to show the corraline.

if it is red slime (cyano bacteria) start removing the bits by hand. i remember the first time i saw red slime in my tank. unfortunately i did nothing about it and the red slime about the size of a quarter got out of control. it smothered my corals rockwork and sandbed. it got so bad that the slime started to form lenghty strings comming off of the bottom. it was horrible i lost all of my corals. it has been 4 months now and i finally have gotten rid of it. when it got out of control i used chemiclean to kill most of it off and then i removed films of it from my sand and rocks everyday and what i couldnt remove i just stirred with my hands to break it up. i kept this up for about every day for 2 weeks and eventually didnt have to do it every day. basically u want to combat this problem when it first happens. so get rid of it be4 its too late. good luck

I would not use that powerhead in my display. They are inexpensive enough and I would spend the money to get a new one to be sure I was not introducing any of the possible problems with the one from the QT.
