Lots of people out there claim to have "The Purple Monster" but most are wantabees. From what I have been told the original PM came in a shippment of wild sps to Steve Tyree. Frags of the original coral (not the mother colonie) sale for 50-100 depending on who you get it from. I don't know what Steve sales a frag for but I know it would take years to get one of his, unless you know him.
I wouldn't say it was extinct but more like a one of a kind coral that just fell into the right hands.
If you know about sps then it shouldn't be a problem. Their not that hard to keep although they do grow slow.
Do you happen to have a picture?
FWIW, I have one in storage. It might be on the pictures I posted last week.
What's the guy's name your getting it from? Is it Carlos, Maybe Dave? Since your in So Cal I'm sure its the real deal. Lots of people have it here.

Graham has the true Tyree Purple Monster and has posted pictures of his in here but I can't find the thread. Here is a shot of one of the guys (Geofloors) in my local reef club's Tyree Purple Monster. I keep begging for a frag but at the growth of about an inch per year it may be a while!!

MEP,
Sorry to hear about Carlos's loss. I should go down and see him. He's kind of the reason we bought a house out this way. I went out to his house about a year ago and did some trading, we liked the area so me bought a home out here. I live up closer to the 210 and Archibald.
I started working for Carnation (down town LA) right out of high school (1978) Then I went to Driftwood Dairy around 1981 and then to Baskin n Robbins in 1984. I worked at their Burbank plant until they closed it around 1990 and then went to the new BR plant in Vernon until they closed it in 1999..now I work for Joka Cola.
Mark,
I haven't seen Grhams tank but I'm sure he has the PM since he got it from Carlos. So you know George (Geofloors) I have trade e-mails with him a few times regarding flooring.
To be honest I don't know what the big deal is. Its really not a great looking coral. Chris has something that some people try to pass off as the PM..IMO, its a lot nicer looking coral. Maybe Chris will chime in with a picture..

Hey i'm from SoCal too. I live in Orange County. I'm planning on having a 120 G tank with lions and eels, maybe later i could make it a Reef which would be great. What corals should i start with? Like which are the easier to care for?

Yes, the purple monster is an extremely slow growing coral. Since I got a frag of it in may (from Carlos), the overall coral has grown about 1/4" on the branches and about 1" of encrusting growth. It isn't the most colorfull coral out there, although it's a great addition to those who enjoy having rare/unusual SPS.

I haven't heard this yet. Do you know when this happened?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but, What is the big hype with the purple monster? Is it rare/endangered or what? Thanks.

Mark,
Yes, I know George very well! He is a really great guy and very generous! About 60% of the stuff in my tanks came from him which I love because his stuff is so healthy. I am getting some bright orange M.Digitata and some Purple M.Cap from him on Sunday at our CMAS meeting. He has some amazing tanks (I think he is up to 9 now)! Here is a thread he put up a little while back on the CMAS site of one of his tanks http://www.cmas-md.org/cgi-bin/ikonb...;f=9;t=28;st=0 If you look at the bottom of the thread in his signature there are some more links. One of them has some pictures of some of the flooring work he has done. He does some pretty amazing work there too!
warlockgp,
If you are just starting out with a reef tank you probably don't want to start out with SPS corals as they are some of the more demanding to keep. It is best to start off slow and keep soft corals (such as mushrooms and polyps) to start as they are usually more hearty and require less light.
Graham,
Your PM is looking good. I am not picky if you want to frag yours I'll take some of yours just as easily! :)
Chris,
That is a sweet piece! That looks a lot like the Garf Purple Bonsai. They (the Headlee's) were speakers at one of our CMAS meetings this fall and we tried to get some frags of that from them then but they were out at the time.

Shoreliner11,
The Steve Tyree Purple Monster is considered the king of the SPS world. As Bigmac said it isn't the best looking but it is very rare. It is also an extremely slow grower (an inch per year if you are lucky) which means that there is very little that can be fragged so there isn't much available (maybe 25 - 40 reefers in the world have the true PM) Steve Tyree is a reefer on the west coast that gets and sells a lot of rare corals. He got the PM a while back in a shipment of corals from I believe Fiji or Bali and no one has gotten an exact match to that coral since. The Mother colony that Steve got died and only the pieces that he fragged for folks are still floating around. I think someone gave a frag of the original back to Steve and he (and a few others) are selling some frags but has a very long waiting list. I guess if you are a SPS nut it is just kind of a status thing more than anything else to say you have a true PM.

Mark,
I hope to be able to frag mine in a year or two. When that happens you'll be able to bid on the frag:D I'm sure bidding will start around 100.00
JK, that will be one coral that wont get fragged for 5 years. Once I get things going and all the RIGHT corals in place I doubt very much I'll do any fragging for years. I'm going to do things a little different this time.
I do know where you might be able to get a frag if you really want one. Its going to cost you and the frag will be VERY small but it will be a PM.
