purple tang with a hippo?

I have had a blue hippo tang in my tank for several months now. I have always heard you should not mix 2 tangs with the same body type. At the price that the purple tangs are at right now... I would love to add one to my tank... but I am afraid that it will start at my blue hippo even though their body types arent overly similar. Any suggestions?

:happyfish I WAS TOLD THAT THE PURPLE TANG IS REAL AGGRESIVE,BUT DEPENDING ON YOUR TANK SIZE TOO,YOUR BLUE TANG CAN ROOL OVER & PLAY DEAD TOO IS IN FEAR.

The Similar shape their speaking of is, Purple, Yellow, and Safin type shapes. A Blue Hippo should be fine. Id just make sure the Purple is the last fish added.

If I get it, it would be the last fish in this tank. Everything is in place except the yellow tang, which we saved for last. Thought maybe this would be a unique replacement since almost everyone has a yellow tang.

It all depends on what size tank you have first of all, and of course the order or which you put the fish in your tank. My suggestion to you is if you do in fact have a big enough tank to house 2 tangs go ahead and add the purple as long as you don't plan on adding any fish after him. There is always the possibility that even though he was the last fish added, he could still harass the existing fish, but that's a chance that anyone takes when adding anything to the tank that is on the aggressive side. I have a 125 gallon and had a purple tang for around 5 months by himself with just small fish. I finally got a hippo around the same size and added the hippo. The purple never attacked unprovoken. The hippo intagonized him, and the purple would swat the hippo with his tail. But never he actually chased the hippo. When I added the sohal a little after the hippo, the purple tang went CRAZY and I mean CRAZY on the sohal and the sohal is twice the size of the purple(7-8"). But the next day, the sohal was the king of the tank and still is. Like I said, tank size DOES matter. Good luck with your decision! I love my purple, and like you said, everyone has a yellow tang!

i have a puple tang in my 210, i have 3 hippo's, 5 yellows and a purple.
all get along fine but i think alot of that has to do with the size of my tank, its a 210 gallon.

I have had my Purple and Hippo along with other tangs together for years and they do fine.....proper tank sizes matter with any animal.

i think it really depends on the fish's attitude.... i just added a purple tang..... the kole tang bothers him... my blu hippo is a wimp and so is this purple tang...... i was so afraid to add the purple, but luckily its working out!
i had a story posted here about a yellow goby i had to get rid of.... he killed two sailfin tangs that i had... he shot at them like a missle... no joke i should have taped this little guy... lots of people didn't believe me, it was crazy... a lot of times its the luck of the draw! (i am not joking in anyway about the 1/2 inch yellow goby monster!)

Eventually...9 adult tangs in a 210 will be like a wrestling battle royal.
If I were you....I'd be thinning the herd.

they are all smaller for now, biggest tang is my 7" hippo but the rest are small.
It will take them a little while to grow, if my plans go as expected i will have my 500 by then anyway.
I have a friend of mine that has a 220 fowlr and has alot more fish (large ones) in his tank with no issues.
large tangs, large look down, 2 large puffer's, large volitan lion, etc.
All well over 8"s, I do not agree with all those fish in that 220 but he has not had any issues, feeding them is something to watch, i have never seen so much food gone!
