I'm really not up on the lighting thing just yet. But I do know that to get the coraline that you want you need to know exactly where your calcium level is. What kind of water are you using, what kind of salt are you using, many factors. Post you water parameters as well, that always helps.

you have to have some , even a small amount, of coraline already onyour rock or glass for Purpe up to work also. just an fyi.

I have standard lights and my coraline is spreading like crazy!! My Ca is at 440 and I use IO salt. I think the Ca levels play the biggest part.

well, since coraline algae is a hard calcium based algae, it is necessary to know the calcium level. Don't add any chemicals to your tank. It will happen when it does. Be patient. But first and foremost, you should test your calcium levels.

Everything about my tank sux, except my Calcium 440-450 and I have coraline specks after 2 months. Its starting to spread nicely.
Oh, I did crush up coraline and put it in the tank. I also got a variety of small rocks that had coraline.

hey hey hey, that's not the kind of attitude we want here. Your tank doesn't suck! Be more positive!

mine didn't start showing until about 6 months. I'm at 9 months now, and i still have very little coraline... i only have florescent lights, though. It all really depends on the individual setup. If you have good lighting, and a good level of calcium, it shouldn't take long for the coraline to start spreading everywhere. If your tank is lacking one of those elements, or if there are other hinderances, it would take longer.

i agree with brolik... there's no purple up in the ocean... I don't ever add any kind of chemical enhancements to my tank, unless it's a supplement. I'm not sure what this purple up is, but i personally wouldn't add it. I'd find out the calcium levels, and add calcium if i need to. with good calcium levels (450 being ideal) and good lighting (PC or better), you should have great coraline growth. If not, there's something in the system that's inhibiting the growth.

I had some LR in my old tank, but going from a 29G to a 72 i added a lot of rock. I am absolutely amazed at how much color is on the rocks. There is pink and purple depending on the type of rock, its incredible. This new tank has only been set up since Aug. I do have a coralife 4x96 or whatever it is lol

This is what one of my lfs said so take it for what its worth. This guy seemed to be on target with questions I asked that I already new the answer to as a bit of a test, you know how some lfs can be.
His advice was actinic lighting. Coraline seemed to prefer this type of lighting in combo with daylight bulbs. He also suggested adding a small urchin. Yes urchins will eat at Coraline but in the process spread the spores throughout the tank actually helping with its growth.

I agree with Murph about the atinic lighting aspect.....I have seen and heard that it does prefer the atinics over bright light

My tank has been up for about three almost four months and I have green and purple coraline showing up everywhere but my glass. I added a bunch of wierd looking shells for my hermits to grow into and they are all covered with purple and green. My live rock looks 100% different now also. I didn't use live sand but anywhere there is a shell or peice of rock the sand has also turned purple. It just takes some time i have a few large peices of LR that where completly covered with coraline when i got them so that helps.
