Purple Up?

Greetings all,
My LFS suggested or tried to convince me on Purple Up. However I read somewhere on SWF.com that one of the forum members didn't recommend it.
Although SWF.com sales it.
Any thoughts on this?

In my opinion it's one of those gimmicky products that works to some degree, it just doesn't work as well as simply maintaining good water parameters.

what r u trying achieve? getting more coraline growth? if ur setup is fairly new, it can and will speed up the purple coraline growth. but i would recommend using it long term. aways test calcium level b4 and after use.

I found that the product does work. However, it seems to create a very light purple colored coraline that just does not look natural to me. Also, EVERYTHING (including tank walls and overflows and powerheads) being covered in coraline also looks bad to me. I like a nice clean natural look. And to achieve this look, I found that simply maintaining 450-500 ppm calcium worked the best for me. I also introduced a nice piece of liverock that I purchased cured from my lfs for $50 that was covered in a nice deep purple coraline growth. I placed this in front of a powerhead, as that is supposed to help the coraline spread. Good luck!

I agree.
the problem with purple up is it doses both calium and iodine, unless your low on both you shouldnt use it. the product also warns after use you get a calcium spike, wich can throw off other parameters in your tank imbalancing your system. and the key to reef tanks is a balanced system. IMO its mildly benificial, slightly dangerous, and a waste of money. why pay for water, if your going to dose calcium buy calcium, same with iodine. test for both if your going to use them.

I've tried and an thought it did something when I was new...but... I set up another tank and didn't use it and I had more coraline faster with the new tank and new rock by keeping my levels at bay. Don't rush your growth you'll have fun battling it soon enough if you keep your levels where they should be it will grow everywhere soon enough.

question to go along with this thread...
I have a tank that is about 2 months old and truly didnt notice the purple growth until 2 weeks ago when it was spreading a lot. Got worried and asked LFS who told me exactly what it was. Is it normal for it to grow that fast on a new tank?

yes. it's normal. make sure it's a hard purple substance though. if you can rub it off with your finger, it's cyanobacteria, which is also normal for a 2 month old tank.

Too much iodine can also fuel unwanted nuisance algae growth.

Thats why purple up is a complete waste of money. Simply maintain a tank properly (ocean like or commonly accepted parameters) under reef type lighting (not even good, low level pc lighting will suffice) and usually by the 3rd month coralline begins to take off
