Our new tank has lots of LR-anyway, we've had it up for about a month now and I've noticed this purple growth on the rock, somespots it's light and some spots it's darker and looks velvety. Anybody know what this is?

Could you give me more info on this "coralline"? What can I do to foster this? There is also other growth, some green bubble like clusters and some grassy looking stuff, mostly in clusters.

Mind you I am just a rookie, but you can do some searching. There are "buffers" on the market that will help promote the coralline growth.
The green bubbles are a bad allagae, do not pop them because that will cause the spores to spread rapidly. I have read that emerald crabs will eat the green bubbles without spreading the spores.
Just surf the site to familarize yourself and I've found a good saltwater book is nice to have.
Cheers,
Chris

A velvety appearance sounds more like cyano to me. Coraline is pink/purple and all shades there of but it's relatively smooth and hard- it's stoney algae. If it's cyano it will "flow" and move, like a purpleish/redish/brownish algae....that stuff isn't good... can you take a picture of what you have?

I haven't tried any pictures yet, but there are many shades of this purple stuff, some light, some darker and some looks pinkish. It just looks like the darker stuff if "softer" but it isn't hairy like. Some of the live rock is really lumpy looking, kinda like bird poop or something.

okay, this algae you're talking about....does it move if you touch it? I mean can you wipe it away? If no then it's probably just coraline alage which is good, you want that. If you finger swip it and you can move it or wipe it away to some degree then we might have problem.

No, it seems like it is part of the rock. It just seems like some areas have changed over the last couple of weeks, plus we just got new lights, t5 10,000k something like that-which I was hoping would help things flourish. Thanks for all the info, too!!

first thing that came to my mind also, many items in the aquaria will need to be "prodded" before a proper I.D. can be made.

You don't need to add any buffers or additives to foster the growth of coraline algea. Coraline algea mostly just needs sufficient calcium in the water which will come normally with regular weekly water changes.
