A skimmer will remove waste from the water, and in doing so keep nitrates and other harmfull waste to a minimum.
Is it a nesessesity???
IMO, Yes. I would not have a reef tank without it. It will make your, and your tank inhabitants, life much easier. You can NEVER have enough filtration or equiptment to keep the tank water at optimal parameters.

They do have HOB skimmers. I have the Aqua C Remora. Excellent product line and does the job well!

A skimmer ranks up there in the necesity range of water for the tank.... Even FO tanks can benefit from use of a skimmer

The Red Sea HOB Prizm Skimmer works very well. It is very inexpensive, and does not take up much room in the tank. It also has a large collection cup so it does not need to be emptied very often, and you can also purchase an optional surface attachment. I purchased my skimmer in an online auction for $45.

The prizim is kind of a luck of the draw deal. You may get a good one and you may not. For hang on back I like the jebo 180 alot of ppl on here use them "there just the kind you have to get going and figure out how to work it took me awhile to lol" And then the aqua C remora "I dont have one" but alot of ppl do and love them but there up there around $150 were as mine cost $57 "including shipping and insurance".
