Do you have plastic tubing or is it pvc piping going to the tank? Im just trying to determine the type of valve you have. On mine i have to screw in 2 adapters. One on each end. Then i cut the clear tubing about 12 inches from the return pump and used hose clamps to secure it the each adapter. Also on the valve itself make sure the arrow is facing toward the flow of water.

that basically the same set up using 1 in plastic tubing from pump to tank want to place the valve inbetween the check valve itself constists of three parts the actuall valve, two threaded ends, and two connectors to connect the threaded ends to the valve itself where i need to cement is where the valve meets the connectors so that no water is lostbefore it gets back to the plastic tubing

You can't screw the connectors into the valve? Then slide the pastic tubing over the other end of the connectors and clamp the tubing. Heres how mine looks... The gray parts are the adaptors. I screwed them in the valve. The valve itself is one piece.

that looks almost exactly like what i have however where u have the tubing going into the valve over the threaded adapter i have to put a connector in becase my valve doesnt have the threads in it that was a seperate part i need to connect

OOOHH so you have a valve without the threading. So you need to cement the connectors into the valve then attach the tubing and clamp it. There has to be some kind of cement you can use. I never understood that valve thats why I bought a threaded one from the hardware store. Much easier to install. Sorry I cant be much more helpful. I was a little confused by your description.

First off you will be fine with the glue. You need to let it dry at least an hour before you start up your pump The can will recommend to let it dry for 24 hours.. I am guessing since you have not asked about the primer you do not have any. You really should, it is the purple stuff in laymans terms.

PVC cement is perfectly fine to use in your aquarium!!! there are no leaching of anything into your tank... the only thing that i would reccoment to you is to just let it cure for appx 1 hour. i used PVC cement on the reccomendation of my LFS and a plumber friend of mine. PVC is used in drinking water in most homes. PVC cement is definately OK to use!!!

As previously mentioned use a primer and then the cement. Oatey makes a primer cement combo. I have never used this, but use their separate Primer (purple and HD cement) and cement.
I am sure squidd will stop by and comment. One comment would be that he can share an alternative to check valves by using a siphon break. Check values can produce a lot of head pressure on your pump and can still fail to close completely. There are many post on this board about siphon breaks. It's as simple as drilling a hole in your PVC just below the water line (inside your tank of course).

Oatley PVC glue is safe to use and won't release and toxins to the tank......Also don't relax and think that the "check valves" will solve or have solved the issues of back flow???? They do fail and are known to fail......So watch them and check them periodically.....
