I was wondering if anyone has ever put a pygmy angel in a reef tank? I like the way the flame angel looks, as well as its size. Has anyone tried this and if so, how'd it go?

i have a coral beauty in my reef, have not had a problem to date. although i know some other people that there angel picks on corals. i think it realy depends on the individual fish.

i agree an the fact that i think it does depend on the ind. fish. but i have a coral beauty (had) in my reef and i took him out because he was picking on my corals. use your best judgement!!!

It's 50/50 chance. My friend has been keeping corals with coral beauty for the past couple of months. No problem. Others have had dwarf angel who picks on corals.
The problem is how mature your system is, it needs an established tank. Why don't you buy one, see how it goes, if your tank is established (6+ months). If it picks, then trade with another one until you find a good one :D .
Well think it through, there are other fishes as beautiful as flame angel is, so be patient and decide :) .

it'll be nice to find a LFS that trade fishes... i haven't find any luck with that.. as far as Dwarf Angels, we've been lucky with our Coral Beauty..

Jawfish - Sterling Heights huh?, I live in Ann Arbor as of now, but am moving to northville in a month (which is when i am setting up my reef tank . . . :D :D ). But, I have found very good luck with trading at two stores out here in Ann Arbor. First, and probably the better of the two is called "The Fish Doctors" I think that they have two locations, one in plymouth and one in ann arbor. Either way, they are more than happy to trade usually. They have mostly SW fish, but as of yet i am only to deal w/ FW. But they generally give store credit of hlaf the value of the fish. Not the greatest deal, but may be better than none. I think that they have a web page www.fishdoctors.com Check em out. They seem pretty knowledgeable. I dont know how convenient Ann Arbor is for you, but either way. I also know of a store on 15 mile and I-75. Cant remember the name, but its a huge store. The address is 3660 15 mile. Hope this helps

As mentioned, it depends mostly on the particular fish, I have seen two coral beautys rid tanks of green star polyps, and heard several other stories of pygmys eating small polyps. Up until recently I have never personally kept a pygmy, but I have always wanted a certain angel, an african flame back, fine fish ;) Anyway, a friend is breaking his tank down and I couldnt resist adopting his flame back, it will eventually be housed in a 29 gallon tank dominated by LPS corals so there will be no small polyps for it to pick at, but at the moment its in my frag tank, and it defintely has a taste for Acropora polyps :( I think 50/50 is way to good of odds, IMO your taking a risk adding any angel to a reef tank containing corals with small polyps, sps, or soft corals. Depends on the individual fish, but I have a flame angel in my 120 that has been there for almost 4 years. He never picks at anything in the tank.

That was what I thought. I was just confused because I always associated pygmy with the tiny little cherub angels, and dwarf with the Coral Beauty, Flame, etc.

I added a some nice xenia to my tank and my Coral Beauty immediately started nipping at it. The next day he was still nipping at it and obviously the xenia would not open up. The coral beauty and the xenia were both super nice and I did not want to part with either of them. The solution: I propped a small mirror on a rock by the xenia and I never saw the coral beauty come near it again. To this day, the coral beauty acts like the xenia is not there and the xenia is growing like a weed!
